MIDNIGHT ADDRESS TO THE MEMBERS
OF NSK, THEIR WIVES AND FRIENDS ON THE EVE OF 1989, LJUBLJANA
Just as the starry sky has its time that ends by the will
of the Supreme One, so the Spirit whose children we are, has chosen to
be molded into vessels made of seconds and hours, days and months, weeks
and years. This Spirit made time the seat of its being in front of which
we stand, while it assigns us the tasks that we have to accomplish so
that He can take us then into His timelessness. And the time we spend
accomplishing these tasks is our life. The Spirit, embodied in the sequence
of days and years, is called the history of the world.
We consider the history of the world as a cup of ecstasy,
from which we drink to be happy. However, we ask ourselves, are we immoral
if we get drunk? And when we warm our heads this way, do we besmear our
consciousness? No, by no means. There is no lie and no selfishness in
us. In us, there is no deceit nor self-interest. We harbor no tactics
and no malicious intentions. We are sheer strategy, the strategy of inexorable
unchangeableness in the changeable. That is why we are not stone-hearted
if we do not respond to the imperatives of the daily politics; that's
why we are not gnawed away by hatred if we view the nation's suffering
as its penitence.
In the hours and weeks, in the months and years we recognize
the reign of one principle and one law in which even the most unbearable
pain dilutes and the strongest poison dissolves. We, who get drunk on
history, propose toasts to the everlasting values that bathe the wounds
of our weary existence. While the bells toll and the hours tick away soundlessly,
we celebrate the firmness of the ethical attitude and the beauty of art
into which we have been summoned by our Creator. With the passage of time,
we listen to the timelessness of love and the immortality of life. And
that is why the circling of the hands is not a purposeless meter but a
yardstick of our passions and aspirations, of our joy and pain, of great
struggles and tender peace. The strokes of the pendulum, announcing the
advent of a new year, are thus an event heralding a new dissipation of
the Almighty's gifts which are here to stay.
The sweet beverage, bestowing the power of the history of
the world on us, emerges from the casks of the One who we can perceive
only through His mercy. And He wants us to do good. That is why our dizziness
is always a debauchery of the mind. That is why we are healthy, and that
is why Gods's bliss is no reason for despair but for pride.
