Review of LAIBACHKUNSTDERFUGE in Werk II (Leipzig), 01.06.2006

Celebrating 321 years of Johann Sebastian Bach and (precisely to the day) 25 years of their own existence, LAIBACH staged their adaptation of Bach's "Die Kunst der Fuge" in Leipzig's "Werk II" on the background of Bach´s native town's annual "Bachfest" on 01.06.2006.

Launching of LAIBACH ANTHEMS

LAIBACH continue their custom to launch albums at prestigious locations from the communist past in Slovenia which they started in 1994 in the tea house of Villa Bled with NATO and last year in the very Villa Bled itself at the release of WAT. The ANTHEMS press conference was held on October 8, 2004 in Vila Podrožnik, Ljubljana, which used to be a protocol villa of the Slovenian communist oligarchy in their times of reign. As always, Laibach proved their excellent taste with the choice of the beautiful venue with a certain historical reputation. .

Earth WAT and Fire

The irony is that so many bands who champion their individualism and various levels of personality cult-dom, look and sound completely similar to one another, while Collectivist, "faceless" Laibach are totally unique. I mean, who else can play techno beats but transcend the here and now, make one feel he is witnessing this ceremony which looks equally 2003, 1933 and 500BC? A partial answer would be disco heroes Earth Wind and Fire, Eurovision novelty-schlaggerists Dschingis Kahn or avant-jazzist Sun Ra. Mixing modern dance, avantgarde and a baffling, scary, unsettling and ludicrous sense of deconstructed antiquity.

"I WANT TO FLY TO BERLIN!"

"Volksbühne" has already been a perfect venue for LAIBACH and NSK in the past, as it was in 1993 scene for "NSK-STAAT BERLIN", an interdisciplinary "Gesamtkunstwerk" of LAIBACH, IRWIN and the DEPARTMENT OF PURE AND PRACTICAL PHILOSOPHY which finalized in the proclamation of "Volksbühne" being territory of the virtual NSK-State in Time. A golden metal-plate in the upper foyer of the venue still gives proof of this certain event that took place here 10 years ago.

"Mashines We're Sending To The Skies!"

On 30.09.2003, LAIBACH presented their program WAT in Stuttgart´s “Röhre” as part of their 2003 European WAT-Tour.

As a matter of fact, after the WAT-premiere in LAIBACH's hometown Trbovlje the location could not be better chosen in the album's context of time and space: Stuttgart, as the hometown of Mercedes-Benz and thus center of German industrial power seems to be a possible parallel to Trbovlje once being the powerful center of Slovenian coalmining-industry in the Ljubljana-area and by now suffering massive economical and social problems after the breakdown of this industry. As German industrial and economical power actually seems to be declining by now, it might be that in some way Trbovlje's past might one day become Stuttgart´s future, when “all the things we made by hand are nowadays made in Japan” and history repeats itself…
